Why most protein shakes skip the one thing your gut actually needs

Walk into any supplement store and you'll see the same promise: more protein. 30 grams. 40 grams. The number gets bigger every year as if that's the whole story.

It isn't.

The nutrient almost every protein shake leaves out, fiber, is the one your digestive system, your blood sugar, and your long-term health are most likely to be missing. The average American gets about 10g of fiber per day. The recommended amount is 25-38g. That gap doesn't just cause bloating. Over time it shapes your gut microbiome, your insulin response, your energy, and how well you absorb everything else you eat.

What fiber actually does

Dietary fiber slows glucose absorption, meaning steadier energy and fewer blood sugar spikes. It feeds beneficial bacteria through fermentation, producing short-chain fatty acids that support your gut lining and reduce inflammation. It also creates satiety signals that help you feel full longer.

Most protein shakes deliver 0-3g of fiber. Mía delivers 22g per serving, 79% of your daily value, alongside 27g of protein, under 200 calories, and less than 1g of sugar.

Where Mía's fiber comes from

The 22g isn't from a single filler ingredient. It's built from a layered stack of whole-food sources: acacia gum (a slow-fermenting prebiotic that's gentle on digestion), fructooligosaccharides (FOS) to selectively feed bifidobacteria, organic flaxseed powder for soluble and insoluble fiber plus omega-3s, oat flour for beta-glucan (the type with the strongest cholesterol evidence), guar gum to support glycemic control, and a full greens blend of spirulina, alfalfa, barley grass, wheat grass, and chlorella for additional plant fiber and micronutrients.

The protein side

Mía uses organic pea protein and organic rice protein together, a complete amino acid profile that's dairy-free and easy to digest. Fiber slows protein absorption, which extends the muscle protein synthesis window, so the combination works better than protein alone.

Why we added a full enzyme blend

A high-fiber, high-protein shake can be hard to digest if your gut isn't used to it. Every serving includes a 17-enzyme blend: amylase, protease strains, lipase, lactase, bromelain from pineapple, papain, cellulase, and more, so your body absorbs what's in the shake rather than just passing it through.

The bottom line

Most shakes give you protein and not much else. Mía was built fiber-first, because that's what most people are actually missing, and everything else was layered on top. One shake that does real work: 27g protein, 22g fiber, less than 1g sugar, 200 calories.

That's Mía.
